Clearing homes on the Sutton side of Howth Head
Sutton is a tombolo, the strip of sand and road that ties Howth Head to the mainland, and the housing follows the shape of it. Along the north shore, Burrow Road runs beside the beach with a line of houses facing the water. On the south slope, Carrickbrack Road climbs the hill with large detached houses on steep sites. Between them, around Sutton Cross and the Howth Road, estates like Offington were laid out in the 1960s and 70s with generous semi-detached and detached homes, and Strand Road and Greenfield Road have the older stock.
It is a settled, long-term area. People bought here to raise families and stayed, which is why so many Sutton clearances are a big house with four or five bedrooms, a double garage, a garden shed and an attic that has not been properly looked at since the 1980s.
The photos on this page are from one of those houses. It was a family home in Sutton where the bedrooms had slowly filled with furniture, clothes, boxes and toys. We cleared it room by room and left each room empty and swept, and the before-and-after pictures show the difference.

What we clear in Sutton
- Whole houses being sold or let after decades in one family. Our main house clearance page explains how we run a job.
- Bereavement clearances, at whatever pace the family needs, with personal effects, paperwork and photographs set aside first. See bereavement clearance.
- Attics, which in the 1960s and 70s houses are large and often floored.
- Double garages and sheds, holding tools, garden furniture, bikes, timber and the old chest freezer. See our garage clearance page.
- Downsizing clear outs, where the family is moving to something smaller and needs the surplus gone before the removal company comes.
Usable items go for reuse or donation where we can manage it, recyclables are separated, and the rest goes to a licensed waste transfer station. Garden waste and rubble are a different kind of job. If the garden needs doing as well, a dedicated garden waste clearance service is the right route.
Hills, driveways and Sutton Cross
Access in Sutton is good in one way and tricky in another. Nearly every house has a driveway, so the van backs right up to the door and the carrying is short. The catch is the hill. Carrickbrack Road and the lanes off it are steep and narrow with tight bends, and some driveways were built for a 1970s saloon car rather than a van. We look at the entrance in your photos and decide in advance whether to drive in or park at the gate.
Burrow Road is narrow too, with the beach on one side, and we take care not to block it. Sutton Cross is busy at school and commuting times, so we time the run in and out around that.
Inside, these are roomy houses with wide stairs and proper landings, which makes heavy furniture easier than in a city terrace. Houses on the hill often have a flight of steps between the road and the front door as well, which adds to the carrying time, so mention them when you send photos.
Why Sutton families call us
A skip outside a Sutton house is possible, since most have a driveway, but a large family home is rarely a one-skip job and you still have to carry everything to it and climb in to pack it. Two people and a box van do the carrying, sort what can be reused or recycled as they go, and come back for a second load if the house needs it. Our house clearance versus skip hire guide goes through the comparison without the sales pitch.
We are fully insured, we hold a current Waste Collection Permit, and the photos above are the standard we work to everywhere. From Sutton we cover Howth, Baldoyle and Bayside, and further along the coast Raheny and Clontarf, with Malahide across the estuary. The rest of the north side is covered on our North Dublin page.
