Clearing homes in Mullingar
Mullingar grew up as a market town on the Royal Canal and the Sligo railway, and the twin towers of the Cathedral of Christ the King still mark it from miles off. The centre is Dominick Street, Oliver Plunkett Street, Pearse Street and Austin Friars Street, with terraces, town houses and flats over the shops, and the old Columb Barracks on the edge of it.
The estates came in rings from the 1970s on. Ardmore and the estates around it are the first wave of semis, Bellview, Grange and the estates on the Dublin and Delvin roads followed through the 1990s and 2000s, and Lakepoint and the newer phases arrived in the boom. They are three and four-bed semis and detached houses with a driveway, a side gate and a garage that has rarely held a car.
Then there is the county. Westmeath around Mullingar is beef-cattle land, and the farmhouses, bungalows on an acre and dormer houses between the town and Lough Owel, Lough Ennell, Kinnegad and Castlepollard come with haysheds, workshops and a lifetime of stored things. Those are the biggest clearances we do in the midlands.

What we clear in Mullingar
- Full house clearances in Ardmore, Bellview, Grange and the Dublin Road estates before a sale, a move or a new letting, attic and garage included.
- Farmhouses with outbuildings anywhere within reach of the town: the house first, then the sheds, the garage and the workshop. Our shed clearance page describes how we sort what comes out of them.
- Bereavement clearances in long-held family homes, at the family’s pace and with personal items kept to one side. Our guide to clearing a house after a bereavement is a good starting point.
- Hoarded houses, cleared with a plan agreed in advance and without fuss in a town where people talk.
- Attics in 1970s and 80s houses that were boarded out and filled and never emptied again.
Rubble from a shed that has been knocked, old fencing and bulk garden waste from a farmyard are a skip-type load rather than a van job and are better handled by a skip or a builder’s waste service; we will tell you if that is the better fit.
Ninety minutes from Dublin
Our crew is Dublin-based and travels out to Mullingar; we do not have a depot in Westmeath. From Dublin the road is the M50 to the M4, the M4 to Kinnegad and then the N4 into town, which is about an hour and a half with the van loaded or empty. That journey is why we concentrate on full houses and bigger jobs in Mullingar and leave single items to local operators.
Travel is built into the fixed price, agreed before the day, and we group Westmeath, Offaly and Longford jobs into the same run where we can. If your dates are flexible, say so and we will find the week that suits both sides. Our post on how far we travel from Dublin goes through the reasoning.
Access in town and out the roads
Estate access in Mullingar is straightforward: driveway or kerb, side gate, out through the hall. Around Dominick Street and Oliver Plunkett Street the parking is metered and the streets are busy, and the flats over the shops have steep stairs, so for those we come early and use rear access where it exists.
Farm lanes are generally fine for a box van, but a soft yard after a wet week, a low gate or a long carry from the back shed all add time. Tell us about the approach when you send photos and we will allow for it. The town centre is busiest on Saturdays, so a weekday is easier for anything near Dominick Street.
Why people in Mullingar call us
The calls from Mullingar are mostly about a parent’s house: a bungalow outside the town or a semi in Ardmore that has to be emptied for sale, with the family split between Westmeath, Dublin and further afield. The rest are executors with a farmhouse and a yard to clear, and landlords turning around a house in the newer estates.
A two-person crew with a box van clears it in one visit, or two for a farmhouse with full outbuildings, and we would rather quote for two days than run out of light on one. We hold a waste collection permit, so usable furniture and household goods go for reuse or donation, metal and timber are recycled, and the rest goes to a licensed transfer station.
Mullingar is the hub of our midlands work, with Athlone to the west, Tullamore to the south and Longford up the N4.
