House Clearance Longford

Longford is the smallest county town in Leinster and one of the furthest from Dublin, a market town on the Camlin with St Mel's Cathedral at the Dublin Street end of the centre and the N4 running past towards Sligo. House clearance in Longford is one of the longest runs we make, so we are straight about it: full-house and estate clearances only, travel built into the price, and jobs grouped with Westmeath and the midlands wherever we can.

Clearing homes in Longford

Longford is a market town that grew around a crossing of the Camlin, and St Mel’s Cathedral, restored after the fire of 2009, still stands over the centre at the Dublin Street end of Main Street. The centre is terraces, town houses, flats over shops and the Longford Shopping Centre, with the old Connolly Barracks on one side and the railway on the Sligo line on the other.

The estates are modest compared with the commuter belt. Teffia Park and the roads around Templemichael are the older estates, and the 1990s and 2000s added semis and bungalows out the Dublin, Athlone and Ballymahon roads, plus a few apartment blocks near the centre. Three-bed semis and bungalows with a garden and a shed are the typical job in the town.

Most of what we do in Longford, though, is outside it. The county is small farms and lake shore, from Granard and Edgeworthstown in the east to Lanesborough on the Shannon and Ballymahon to the south, and the farmhouses, bungalows on an acre and dormer houses along those roads come with haysheds, workshops and a lifetime of stored things.

What we clear in Longford

  • Full house clearances in Teffia Park, Templemichael and the newer estates on the approach roads, before a sale or a new letting, with the attic and the shed in the same price.
  • Farmhouses and outbuildings across the county, quoted as a whole site and planned as one or two days. Our shed clearance page describes how we sort tools, timber and scrap as it comes out.
  • Bereavement and estate clearances for executors and families who have left the county, done at your pace with personal items kept aside. Our guide on clearing a house after a bereavement sets out the order to do things in.
  • Hoarded houses, cleared quietly to a plan agreed in advance, with the same crew from start to finish.
  • Bungalows on the lake shore at Lanesborough and towards Lough Ree, when a holiday home or a retirement home is being sold.

One of the longest runs we make

Our crew comes out from Dublin to Longford; we have no base in the county and do not pretend otherwise. From Dublin the route is the M50 to the M4, the M4 to Kinnegad and the N4 through Mullingar to Longford, which is around two hours each way. That journey only makes sense for a full house, a farmhouse with outbuildings or an estate clearance, where one crew, one visit and one fixed price are still the cheapest and simplest way to get it done.

The price you agree includes the travel, with no mileage charge appearing afterwards. We group Longford with Mullingar, Athlone and Tullamore work whenever the diary allows, so a little flexibility on the date is the single thing that most helps the quote. Our post on how far we travel from Dublin is frank about where a Dublin crew stops being good value.

Lanes, yards and the town centre

Estate houses in Longford are easy to work: driveway or kerb, side gate, out through the hall. Main Street and the streets around the cathedral are busy and have limited parking, and the flats over the shops have steep stairs, so for those we start early and use rear access where it exists.

Farm access is the real variable. Most lanes take a box van without trouble, but a soft yard after a wet month, a low gateway or a long carry from a back shed all add time, and a two-day job is better planned as two days than squeezed into one. Describe the approach, send photos of each outbuilding, and we will plan the day around them.

Why people in Longford call us

Almost nobody who rings us about a Longford house is in Longford. It is a son or daughter in Dublin, a brother in England, a solicitor acting for an estate, or an executor who has already made the drive three times and does not want to make it a fourth. They want one company to come once, do everything and send photos of the empty rooms afterwards.

A two-person crew with a box van does that, and because we hold a waste collection permit you know where the load goes. Furniture and goods with a life left in them go for reuse or donation, metal, timber and cardboard are recycled, and what is left goes to a licensed transfer station. Our post on what happens to items after a house clearance describes the sorting in detail.

Longford is the far end of a midlands run that takes in Mullingar, Athlone and Tullamore, and we seldom go there without one of those on the same list.

House clearance in Longford: your questions

Is Longford not too far for a Dublin house clearance company?

It is far, and we say so. We are a Dublin crew, and Longford is around two hours from Dublin by the M50, M4 and N4, so we come for full houses, farmhouses and estate clearances where one crew and one fixed price, travel included, still make sense for you. A single item or a van quarter-full does not, and a local operator would be the better choice.

Can you clear a farmhouse outside Longford with several sheds and an old milking parlour?

We can, and it is exactly the kind of job that justifies the drive. We quote for the house and every outbuilding together from photos or a walk-round, plan it as a one or two-day job, and sort scrap metal, timber and anything reusable as we go. Fuel, farm chemicals and gas bottles are outside what we carry, so flag them beforehand.

How much notice do you need, and can you fit the date around a Longford estate agent?

A week or two is ideal, because it lets us pair your clearance with other Longford or Westmeath work and keep the quote reasonable. Within that, we can usually agree a date that suits the agent or the solicitor, and once it is booked the price does not move.

Do you cover Edgeworthstown, Ballymahon, Granard and Lanesborough as well?

We do, under the same Longford quote. They are all within half an hour of the town, and a farmhouse near Granard or a bungalow near the Shannon at Lanesborough is as good a reason for the run as a house in the town itself.

The farm is in the drumlins near Drumlish. Will the lanes be a problem for the van?

Usually not, but north Longford's drumlin lanes are small, winding and often tightly hedged, with sharp turns into farm gateways. Send the Eircode and photos of the lane and the gate, and if the last stretch is too tight we park where it is safe and carry. That area is the far end of an already long run, so it suits a full farmhouse clearance.

Which train do I take from Dublin to meet you in Longford?

The Sligo line from Dublin Connolly stops at Longford, and most houses in the town are a short taxi or walk from the station. Let us know which train you are catching and we will be at the house to go through it with you, and you can be on a train home before the van is loaded.

We have a house in Longford and a flat in Dublin to clear for the same estate. Can one company do both?

Yes, and it keeps everything under one quote and one point of contact. The Dublin flat is on our doorstep and can be done on a separate day, while the Longford house is planned as its own trip, ideally grouped with other midlands work. Send photos of both and we will price them together.

There is an old solid-fuel range in my parents' farmhouse outside Longford. Can you take it?

Usually, but tell us first. Ranges are still common in farmhouses around Longford, and a cast-iron one is very heavy and has to be disconnected from the flue and any water pipes by a plumber before we move it. An older range may be worth offering to a reconditioning dealer; otherwise it goes out with the scrap metal from the rest of the house.

We are selling a bungalow near Ballymahon and want the curtains and light fittings left. Can you clear around them?

Yes. Tell us what is staying, such as curtains, blinds, light fittings, the cooker or fitted wardrobes, and we take only the loose contents. Check the sale contract with the agent first, because it may list items that are meant to stay with the house.

We would like good furniture from our mother's Longford home to stay in the town. Is that possible?

Yes. Ring a local charity shop or community group before the day and let them collect the pieces they want, or mark them and we leave them ready in the hall. Whatever is left after that, we load and sort for reuse, recycling or disposal as usual.
